The global pandemic of 2020 has highlighted the importance of location and proximity to essential living needs. We partnered with HERE Technologies to create a tool that would allow you to check whether an address meets the criteria for a 15-minute city.
The concept of a 15-minute city has been championed by Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, as a way of thinking about urban areas. In a 15-minute city, any person would live within walking distance from essentials, such as grocery stores, medical facilities, and cultural and leisure spots.
Input an address to see if it meets the criteria for a 15-minute city
In addition to the US map, we created versions for the UK, France, and Germany, available in English, French, and German. The map was featured in a number of media outlets, including Fast Company, prompting discussions on social media around the accessibility to basic needs in various cities in the world.
The 15-minute-city map app takes full advantage of the HERE Javascript API, making use of the HERE routing and autosuggest services. The starting point for the isochrone line is the address input by the user. Initial designs were made using Figma and the app was built with React.js and Next.js.
